Tree service quotes for Saginaw homeowners, matched to one local provider

Dead ash in the back yard, an oak that needs trimming at the right time of year, a stump that's been there since the last big wind: describe it once, and we pass it to an independent tree service that works in Saginaw County. They come out, look at it, and give you their own price.

We're a referral site, not a tree company. We don't climb, cut, or quote. What we can do is make the request simple and give you the local background that helps you ask good questions.

A tree-care calendar for the Saginaw Valley

Timing matters more for tree work in Michigan than most people expect. Here is how state and university guidance lines up across the year.

Nov to MarDormant season. The Michigan DNR says winter is the best time to prune oaks. Good window for planned removals on frozen ground.
Apr 15 to Jul 15Do not prune or wound oaks. The DNR says sap beetles can carry oak wilt spores into fresh cuts, and MSU research puts peak risk in May and June.
SummerSevere thunderstorm season, with straight-line wind events. Look for red oaks that drop their leaves suddenly, a warning sign the DNR lists for oak wilt.
FallLeaf-off makes it easier to see deadwood and structure. A good time to have hazard trees assessed before winter storms.

The ash trees are still a Saginaw problem

Emerald ash borer was first identified in North America in 2002, after dying ash trees near Detroit were traced to the beetle. Tree-ring research later dated the earliest ash deaths from it to about 1997 in Canton, Michigan. Two decades on, many neighborhoods across lower Michigan still have dead or dying ash standing in yards and along fence lines.

A dead ash is not just an eyesore. Purdue University's forestry extension and New Jersey's agriculture department both warn that ash killed by EAB dries out and becomes brittle, so limbs can snap with little force, and they advise against climbing dead or dying infested ash. That's why a provider may want to use a lift or take the tree down in sections from the ground, which affects the price. If you know a tree is ash, say so in your request.

Oak wilt: why "just trim it in June" is a bad idea

Oak wilt is a fungal disease that kills red oaks (northern red, black, and pin oaks, the ones with pointed leaf tips). The Michigan DNR says red-oak-family trees can die within weeks, and that the disease spreads through connected root systems, on beetles that visit fresh wounds, and when people move firewood cut from infected trees. The state's guidance is simple: don't prune oaks from April 15 to July 15. If an oak gets wounded during that window, cover the wound right away with tree-wound paint or latex paint. That is the one situation where the DNR recommends painting wounds.

Oak wilt is common in Michigan's Lower Peninsula, according to the DNR. If an oak on your property dropped its leaves suddenly in summer, mention it. A provider may recommend testing before the tree is removed or the wood is moved.

Heavy clay and big wind

Saginaw County sits on the flat Saginaw Bay lake plain, where old glacial-lake clay and silt deposits are often more than 50 feet thick and most soils are poorly drained. Wet, heavy ground affects access for trucks and lifts, how much lawn damage a job leaves, and how stump grindings settle.

Wind is the other half of the story. On March 30, 2025, a squall line crossed southern Lower Michigan, and the National Weather Service office in White Lake listed Saginaw County among the hardest-hit areas. Its storm reports include multiple trees down on houses in the southern part of the county. Storm work is a different job from planned removal. Our storm damage page covers what to do first.

City trees versus your trees

If you live in the City of Saginaw, the tree between the curb and sidewalk (the parkway) is probably the city's. The city's Streets Division says it inspects, trims, and removes hazardous parkway trees, and asks residents to report a dangerous tree in the right-of-way to its call center at 989-399-1311. The city's Engineering Division also says a right-of-way permit is required for any work in the public right-of-way, which typically runs from about the center of the road to about three feet behind the sidewalk. Trees on your side of that line are generally yours to deal with.

Ballpark costs (published averages, not quotes)

We never quote prices. For context only, HomeGuide's published national averages are $400 to $1,200 for tree removal (up to about $3,000 for large or complex removals), $400 to $900 per tree for trimming, and $120 to $400 for grinding one stump. Height, lean, access, wires, and cleanup drive the actual number.
